2004 What's Hot, What's Not
If my kids had any idea that I was writing an article on "What’s Hot, What’s Not in 2004", I’m confident they would tell you that my expertise falls under the "what’s not" part. My daily dress and my basic sense of style are most likely all gleaming examples of what should have been left in 2002. However, I’m a good little researcher, and this year I’m going to impress my girls with my newfound style. Read along and you can be on the cutting edge in 2004 with me.
In the world of astrology, the year 2004 is the year of the Monkey. It will be filled with improvisation, imagination and innovation. For the fearless and outspoken individuals taking the lead, the word "no" will not register. Being weak and slow to decide are both out, as the quick-witted will be the ones to reach new heights. If you are interested in finding more about your astrological predictions for the year, check out Astro Advice.
Gourmet chocolate sits at the top of the list for food trends in 2004 according to Entrepreneur.com. People desire to pamper themselves and have only the best for their treats. The creamy chocolate delicacies run the gamut from chocolate bars and rich truffles to the more exotic additions of hot peppers and other spices. Low carbohydrate foods continue to be very popular. A diet trend that was started with The Atkins’ diet in the late-90’s, the low-carb craze is now sparking new product lines, altered menus, and even a new superstore in Maryland that features low carbohydrate items. Lastly, in the world of food, we all are continuing to appreciate fresh breath. Those spicy little mints that come in the cute tins are hotter than ever. Look for new flavors and the addition of fruit essences to the spicy mints.
Even though the thought of sunbathing is far from most of our minds, winter skin definitely needs some pampering. Body facials and salt/sugar scrubs are very hot this year, as dry flaky skin is on its way down the drain. As spring and summer approach again, tan legs and arms will enter our thoughts. The health of our skin is foremost in 2004 and tanning beds will become the next dust collector. Turn towards fake tanners and spray tanning salons to achieve that beautiful bronze glow.
For an up to date hairstyle this year, the layered cut is "it." It is one of those perfect styles that can be adapted to either long or very short hair, although the long shag is the most popular. That all one-length hairstyle you have been sporting for several years is in need of a change. Also, thermal relaxants are definitely out, as curls are making a wonderful comeback. Wear your hair loose, relaxed and flippy; you’ll look perfect for casual day or dressy night.
Clothing trends for spring include sweet, but chic, floral dresses and skirts. Pretty and feminine fabrics are in. Also, big this spring is the “boyfriend” sweater. Borrow a pullover sweater from your sweetie, or buy yourself a new pullover and pair it with a pretty skirt or slacks. Accessorize your outfit with a pair of open toed heels and you will be one very hip lady. Crocheted and knit fabrics will be hot on the beach this year. Personally, I will not be one of the brave ones wearing a crocheted bathing suit, but you could very likely see me leaving my canvas bag behind in favor of a cute new knitted one.
Gardens are also subject to trends and styles. The in-style gardens of 2004 will have a simple chic look, leaving over the top, over-grown and jam-packed gardens in the past. Gardens can be simplified by planting 10-12 of the same plants, rather than planting the same number of different plants. In order to keep that simple chic look, mixed containers are out; too much variety, color and texture can make the container look over-done. Using just one great color makes for a beautiful planter. Lastly, organic gardening continues to be hot, hot, hot! More and more individuals are finding less harmful and environmentally safer ways to treat garden pests, recognizing the extreme importance of their family’s long-term health, as well as the health of the little creatures around us.
2004 is already looking to be a year full of fun, imagination, pretty colors and continued focus on health for our families and for us. While I cannot promise that my clothing and shoes will be on the cutting edge of fashion, I will be sporting my short layered hair-style and will definitely be indulging in some of that gourmet chocolate.
~Lynette is a freethinking, trendy wife and mom of three. She originates from the Pacific Northwest where you will find her carrying a baby on one hip, a cute crocheted bag on the other, balancing a latte somewhere in between. On a really good day, she might have even combed her hair.
