Self Defense

Self-defense is something everyone should know something about. There is no absolutely 100% safe place in the whole wide world. You can never be too careful, and no matter how safe your area might be, there is always a chance that you could be put in a situation that you might have to fight your way out of. "The best defense is a good offense." If at all possible, do not allow yourself to be put in this kind of situation. Some of the most basic rules are:

~Be Aware. Awareness is one of the most important things in self defense. By being aware of your surroundings, many threats on the streets can be avoided

~If you see or sense problems on your way, change routes or go to the other side of the road and prepare to run or defend yourself

~Never wear conspicuous jewelry when you are walking in the streets

~Never hitchhike; use buses or taxis

~Never act, or look like, an easy target

~Most "fights" are won before they start, and aggressors will back down if you maintain eye contact and are not intimidated by them.

Following these simple tips can vastly improve your chances of staying safe. For more great recommendations on how to protect yourself from danger, see these Self Defense Tips for Women.

If someone tries to attack you with a weapon, run! But do not run in a straight line. Even well trained police officers will only hit a moving target a small percentage of the time, and the chances of them hitting a vital organ are slim. Run from side to side, weaving all the way. And while you're running, scream your face off! You want to draw as much attention to yourself and the situation as possible in an effort to scare away the attacker and get yourself some help.

Sexual assault is probably the most feared by women. Staying alert is definitely your best tool in this situation. You can never be too careful when you are alone, especially at night. Don't be afraid to ask someone to walk you to your car if you feel uncomfortable. Check the back seat before you get in--even if you've only been gone a minute. Avoid places that are not well lit or well populated. Check out this site about Safety Tips and Self-Defense Against Rape. And for even more information, the NYPD Detective Bureau site is full of good tips on how to protect yourself against sexual assault.

No woman ever thinks she will be the target of a violent act, but it can't hurt to be prepared just in case. Knowing what you should do when put in a dangerous situation can really help get you out safely.
